What is Book Marketing?

Book marketing refers to the activities and strategies authors, publishers, and other stakeholders undertake to promote and sell a book. Effective book marketing is crucial for reaching the target audience, increasing visibility, and driving sales. Here are some critical components of book marketing.

The things you have to do to successfully market your book might surprise you - but with some elbow grease, you’ve got this!

The Essential Components of Book Marketing

First, you'll need an author's website. Many authors have a dedicated website where readers can find information about the author, their books, and upcoming events. A professional author website is essential for any author considering pitching to a publisher. Start now - you'll want to grow your website SEO to have a considerable amount of traffic so you can show your SEO numbers for your site by the time you're pitching to publishers. Suppose you wait to start and build your site. In that case, your new site won't have many visitors, and a publishing company isn't going to bring on board an author who doesn't have good SEO and traction to their website.

Email marketing is the second essential piece to your book marketing. Again, start building your list now with your contacts in your email. I recommend going into your business email and cleaning up your contacts, merging, fixing, and editing them to use them for export into your email list.

You'll want to start building your email list with a lead magnet or a drip campaign to get more readers on your list. Building an email list allows authors to directly communicate with readers. Authors often send newsletters with updates, exclusive content, or promotional offers. Looking to partner with a publisher? You'll need 10,000 emails for a publisher to consider talking to you. Start now and get those emails going!

Get cozy with podcasters! Getting interviewed on a podcast to pitch your book is one of the best ROI investments of your time you can make. Make sure to listen to the podcast first to see if their message fits your message well. Pitch the producer once you've found podcasts you want to be interviewed on. My favorite platform for finding podcasters is PodMatch. Alex, the founder of Podmatch, has a fantastic space where you can contact podcasters on the platform and ask them to be guests on their show. You can join for free; however, if you want to make the most of your time on the platform and maximize the number of introductions in one day, I would highly recommend getting the paid plan.

Remember to offer something in exchange for the podcaster to put their time and resources into your interview. Whether that's a blog with a link back to their podcast, spreading the word on your social media, or sponsoring their podcast - make sure to give back to your podcast host!

Effective book marketing is an ongoing process that requires creativity, persistence, and a deep understanding of the target audience. Successful authors often combine various strategies to create a comprehensive book marketing plan.
